Hello and welcome back to the Live Life Off Leash Blog!
This weekend is Daylight Savings weekend and like many of you are are really excited to see the arrival of spring and the days getting longer. With the time change and warmer temperatures everyone is looking forward to having more time to spend outside without the frigid temperatures or the short evenings.
If you plan on getting out more with your pup keep a few things in mind. If you're not in prime condition going into spring your pet probably isn't either. So Make sure not to over do it right away. Sometimes when we get those great 60 degree spring days we get excited to get out and do a big hike or long run or bike ride. But keep in mind if your pet has been on the couch most of the winter they will need to be conditioned to come along just like you need to be conditioned to join a race.
Start your spring routine! Get out and start moving! Build a little more every day and then by time the weather is really nice and warm both you and your pet will be in prime condition to hit the trails! Doing too much too soon can be damaging to your dog. They can suffer sport related injuries just like people can when they are not fit. So start slow, but get out there and get moving. Keep an eye on your pet and watch for signs of stress.
Excessively heavy breathing, limping, wanting to stop. These are all signs you're doing too much too soon. Start with 15-20 minutes of work and move up from there. With the longer days coming you'll soon have enough time to be doing those long walks, hikes and bike rides all summer long as long as you start conditioning your pet now.
